Psyllium Husk
Psyllium is a fiber obtained from the seeds of Plantago ovata, an herb that grows in India. It is used by many people as a dietary supplement. Available in the form of husk, powder, granules, and capsules; it is a soluble fiber that can absorb water and turn into a viscous compound. The upper thin white layer of the seeds is known as Psyllium husk that is separated through a mechanical procedure without using chemicals.
Psyllium husk is mainly available in three grades of purity, which are 99%, 98% and 95%. This husk coating is deemed to be a flawless dietary fiber, which is the only segment of the plant used in making psyllium-based items. Consisting of nutrients like proteins, glycosides, choline, polysaccharides, and vitamin B1; it’s fiber content goes above 80%. The fiber found in husk is called hemicellulose, a complex carbohydrate also found in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Although indigestible, hemicellulose is fragmented in the colon and nourishes the amiable intestinal flora.
Health Benefits:
- Psyllium husk relieves one from constipation due to being a bulk-forming laxative. On the other hand, it acts as a water absorbing agent and helps treat diarrhea as per research.
- Intake of fiber supplements can aid in controlling the body’s glycemic responses like minimizing insulin and blood sugar levels. Hence; psyllium being a water-soluble fiber can mainly help in lowering the blood sugar levels.
- It helps enhance the wholeness of a meal, thereby controlling appetite and aiding weight loss.
- Psyllium helps the body excrete fat and bile acids, which causes the liver to use up cholesterol for producing more bile acids. This results in a reduction of blood cholesterol levels.
- Beneficial for the heart, as per the American Heart Association (AHA) such dietary fibers decrease the risk of stroke and heart disease.
- The intestinal bacteria are fed and grown by prebiotics that are non-digestible compounds, and psyllium has such prebiotic effects as per research.

Identification A: Fixed in Cresol, cells viewed in microscope comprise polygonal prismatic cells with 4 – 6 straight or a bit wavy wall.
Identification B: Fixed in alcohol and irrigated using water, when viewed in microscope the mucilage in the outer portion of epidermal cells expands quickly and moves into solution.
